Black & Blue Burger with Chipotle Dip

I come from a long line of foodies, with comfort food and BBQ coursing through my veins. When I was a wee little lass, I would spend my days at the diners my dad owned back in the day, from a deli on Michigan Avenue in Detroit to the nostalgic Rocky’s Pizza on Nine Mile and most recently, the Clubhouse BBQ on Woodward in Ferndale.

Foodies would drive for miles to sample his culinary creations. He could throw down a steak hoagie so incredibly delicious, it would attract enthusiasts the world over. I can remember sitting in the back of the diner, both hands wrapped firmly around the infamous hoagie. The soft, oblong bun was a syringe, soaking up the butter from a pile of sautéed steak and onions while melted provolone oozed over the top of the sandwich. As I took a bite of ambrosia, tears began to well up in the corners of my eyes.

I still have dreams about that sandwich.

While my dad is the sensei of the craft, I am still a budding grasshopper. But I had a breakthrough moment yesterday as I hovered over my newly purchased gas and charcoal grill combo, a thick, juicy hamburger christening the grates.

As I plucked the burger off the grill, I began building my masterpiece: grilled bun, seasoned meat, a heaping pile of grilled onions, crumbled blue cheese and my secret weapon: Garden Fresh Gourmet Chipotle Dip.

Have mercy!

The medley of flavors nearly knocked me off my feet. I stared at my husband in disbelief, mouthing the exclamation: oh-em-gee. His eyes were closed as he chewed ever so slowly, savoring every morsel.

The ambrosial juices of the sautéed onions exploded across my tongue, creating a symphony of flavor against the sharp taste of the blue cheese and the sweet and spicy goodness of the Chipotle Dip.

This was one fine burger and may have upgraded my culinary status to black belt.
